Description
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director Family Division. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination and management of daily activities and operations of the Paralegal Unit. The incumbent will interact with officials or representatives of other agencies, stakeholders, and the general public in obtaining or furnishing information, clarifying questions, providing procedural guidance, explaining policies and procedures, and program operations.
- Performs highly responsible procedural/administrative services in support of the Director of the Family Division.
- Supervises and trains a team of five (5) Paralegals to ensure filings are in compliance with Maryland Rules and operational protocol.
- Oversees and coordinates the daily activities of the Paralegal Unit to ensure that family law matters are reviewed and processed within established time frames in accordance with Maryland Rules and operational protocol.
- Coordinates a variety of legal activities, special projects, and functions.
- Plans, reviews, and modifies office procedures to ensure that the most efficient methods are utilized.
- Performs complex research regarding Family related cases.
- Handles confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Compiles data and statistics regarding the status of cases processed within the Family Division and prepares detailed reports/memoranda.
- Reviews and researches legal matters pertaining to family law, inclusive of domestic, child support, juvenile, and CINA/TPR.
- Performs case reviews and ensures proper case flow of family cases to ensure documents are filed in accordance with Maryland Rules.
- Prepares and publishes the staff assignment calendar for Scheduling and Status Conferences.
- Responds to and provides procedural guidance and information to all parties.
- Consults with Magistrates, Calendar Management, and Clerk's Office staff on a consistent basis to meet established goals.
- Responds to general inquiries, referrals, and complaints in a timely and efficient manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, pre-law, paralegal studies, or a closely related field; plus three (3) years paralegal experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have knowledge and understanding of family law procedures and current familiarity with statutes affecting the work of agencies dealing with Family Law.
Preferred Qualifications
At least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role is preferred. Experience working in a legal setting on family issues is highly desired.
